Orkney Archaeology Society
The Friends of the Orkney Archaeological Trust (FOAT) is no more - the new name is the Orkney Archaeology Society. Formerly much excavation and commercial archaeology in Orkney was carried out under the auspices of the Orkney Archaeological Trust's Projects Unit, but this has now been replaced by the new Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology, so it was thought appropriate to change FOAT's name too.
The Orkney Archaeology Society exists to promote and support archaeology in Orkney and membership is open to all.
The Society is carrying on an honourable tradition of archaeology societies in Orkney - the first was the Orkney Antiquarian Society, formed in 1922. The Society published 15 volumes of their Proceedings up until 1939, containing much new research on a wide variety of subjects, from excavations to place-name studies. Unfortunately the Society didn't survive the war and the Proceedings are quite hard to come by outside of Orkney, although inter-library loans should be able to access them. I've just prepared a volume by volume content list for the Proceedings of the Orkney Antiquarian Society and an A-Z of papers by author for my own use - feel free to click on the download button below for your own copy.
